5 YEARS. 5 YEARS OF MY LIFE AS A TEACHER OF ENGLISH.
So, 5 years of editing, writing, creating, correcting and specialising.
5 years of words, projects, varied audiences, organisation and understanding different worlds.
What makes an ex-English teacher the perfect person to write your content, organise events and virtually support?
Born editors
As an ex-English teacher and quite often, literacy coordinators, correcting and editing student work (and whole school emails) come naturally to us. We are born editors - when let loose on spelling crimes such as 'lose' and 'loose,' we tend to lose control of our emotions. Our punctuation pride will have us speculating in detail on the best choice - the semi-colon or the conjunctive. And we will FOREVER be in debate over starting sentences with the word, AND... (See what I did there?)
We love words. In all forms. Even when it is chunked into minor sentences.
English teachers are pretty fabulous at our sentence formations and will help you decide on the declarative or the interrogative. Why wouldn't you have an English specialist on your team?
Specialists in ALL
In my time as an English teacher, one unit involved the art of rhetoric. From John F Kennedy's iconic 'We Shall Go To The Moon' to Malala Yousafzai's inspiring Education Address to the UN, the variety of an English teacher's knowledge and breadth is BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS. Speaking of wildest dreams, studying Taylor Swift's lyrics in a lesson and the importance and influence of the Eras Tour: ALL PART OF ENGLISH TEACHING. We are constantly expected to keep up to date with modern culture whilst also maintaining our classic understanding of Shakespeare, Dickens and Steinbeck... (although the literary canon seriously needs updating...)
An English teacher's variety and diversity in texts has no bounds. So this is why they are perfect for writing your copy - we do the research, we write the copy, we create the final resource.
Every day is an EVENT...
Lesson plans are meticulously planned. From the starter activity to spark excitement and interest to the meaty middle of extended writing, every teacher knows the importance of pacing a lesson, prioritising the important tasks and ensuring room for mistakes.
I can't tell you the amount of times that a student disrupted the class, or a latecomer arrived and destroyed the flow... but you know what you have to do... you adapt. You work quickly, swiftly and smartly - and at the end of the lesson, the objective has still been met. The class has learned something new and you've done your job! This happens all the time when organising events, you might have your keynote speaker's train being delayed... what do you do? Shift the timetable.
The AV equipment isn't working (happens constantly in the world of education...) - well, looks like I've got to change my tactics - how can we engage them without the world of visual?
Every day is an event. Every event needs to be organised and planned for every scenario.
So, in summary...
Ex-English teachers, and teachers in general, have an abundance of transferable skills across all industries - we are essentially milliners of mastery in many, many fields.
If you are looking for a VA or copywriter for your business, give me a metaphorical bell... or let's have a coffee!!
